As the year comes to a close, we have decided to name our last issue ‘The Legacies Issue’. This is because we are now in the festive season, a time that dedicated to family; we would like to explore the different ways in which family shapes the way we turn out as human beings and what better way that feature the extraordinary Ammara Brown as our cover star?
Ammara’s story begins with growing up in a gifted family where she carefully mastered her craft and eventually made a name for herself all these years later while entrenching her father’s legacy. In her interview we got a bit personal and asked her all the questions that you’ve probably always wanted to ask her about how she has managed to dominate the music industry for so long.
Of course family is never perfect; they have the ability to bring out the best and the worst in all of us and that’s why we’ll be highlighting some of these issues such as the guide to dealing with your problematic family members as well the bad financial legacies we may have inherited.
As the year comes to a close some will be spending Christmas reunited with their families, while other will decide to server ties with their families this holiday. Whether or not you’re spending Christmas with your family or away either purposefully or because of the distance that plagues every Zimbabwean; I would like to remind you that your experience is valid.
You have every opportunity to make the best out of whatever situation you may find yourself; you can start new traditions or reinforce healthy old ones. Legacies makes us who we are and we have the power to choose who we want to be. This holiday can be a sensitive to queer people in particular because they are not accepted or women because they come home and hang up their adult coats and become children again. You feel like tucking yourself in and watching the Office till the holiday is over? That’s perfectly okay. You come first, your legacy comes first whether or not you choose to pass down the familial route or otherwise.
Legacies mean different things for different people in different situations. I personally don’t believe in the concept of a good or bad year because time is ultimately a human construct and that you can decide to make a change at any point in time but as the new year approaches it’s a great opportunity to make those changes in your life a create your very own legacy.
